From Oct. 1, Winter Tires Become a Must on B.C.’s Highways
October 08 2025,

When Oct. 1 arrives in B.C., it is more than just cooler mornings and shorter days. It is the start of winter tire season on most highways across the province. These rules will remain in place until April 30, though certain routes without mountain passes or heavy snowfall ease restrictions a little earlier, ending March 31.
Which Highways Are Included
Drivers planning to travel into the North and Interior must have the right tires in place. The requirement also covers sections of South Coast highways, including the Sea to Sky, and parts of Vancouver Island routes like the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14 and Highway 28. The Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are not included in the mandatory list, but weather changes quickly, so being ready never hurts.
Tire Standards That Keep You Covered
The province recognizes two symbols when it comes to winter readiness. Tires marked with M+S (mud and snow) or the mountain and snowflake logo meet the standard. They must also have a tread depth of at least 3.5 millimetres to be considered safe. Skipping these requirements could result in a $121 fine, which is far more expensive than preparing in advance.
Chains and Commercial Vehicles
Commercial drivers are also included in the rules. Starting Oct. 1, most commercial vehicles must carry chains, with roadside signs indicating when they need to be used. Chains are not required in the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but elsewhere they are part of ensuring safer roads for everyone.
